The Comparative Literature Department at Ibn Haldun University

The Comparative Literature Department at Ibn Haldun University offers an undergraduate program that examines literature within the context of interactions between cultures and civilizations, aiming to provide students with a broad perspective. With its qualified academic staff, supportive educational environment, and creative teaching methods, our department enables students to understand and analyze literary traditions while developing their critical thinking skills.

The language of instruction in the program is English. In addition, thanks to our university’s trilingual policy, students gain proficiency in English, Turkish, and Arabic, acquiring the ability to express themselves effectively in both written and spoken forms in all three languages. Thus, by examining literary texts from Turkish, Ottoman, European, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and other literatures from a comparative perspective, they develop critical thinking skills in social and cultural contexts.

Throughout the program, students learn the fundamental theories and methods of comparative literature; analyze and compare literary works from diverse cultural and linguistic contexts and gain a deep understanding of the historical and cultural backgrounds that shape these texts. By integrating disciplines such as philosophy, history, and art into their literary studies, they learn to evaluate literature within a broader framework. They also conduct independent research and produce academic work using digital tools and resources effectively. Students acquire the ability to interpret texts through critical and analytical approaches, develop a global perspective by exploring the intercultural connections of literature, and express their ideas clearly and coherently both orally and in writing.

Our students also have the opportunity to pursue double majors or minors, not only within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in programs such as Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, History, and Political Science and International Relations, but also in many other departments across different faculties.

Our graduates may choose to continue their studies at the graduate level, or pursue careers in publishing, translation, editing, screenwriting and documentary writing, museology, tourism, and cultural promotion, among many other creative and culture-based fields. The Comparative Literature Department not only provides its students with a multilingual and multicultural educational environment but also aims to educate well-equipped individuals who follow contemporary debates in literature and cultural studies and can contribute to these fields.
