An article co-authored by Dr. Rahmi Oruç, faculty member of the Department of Comparative Literature, and Dr. İ. Didem Arvas, titled “‘Commendable in an Ottoman of his background: Christopher Ferrard and a Reassessment of his Contributions on Islamic Literary Sciences,” has been published in the journal Middle Eastern Literatures in August 2025.
In this study, Dr. Oruç and Dr. Arvas critically reassess Christopher Ferrard’s nation-centered approach to 19th-century Ottoman rhetoric. The article highlights how this perspective tends to privilege certain scholarly positions while marginalizing others, and it emphasizes the need for more balanced research that considers Ottoman rhetorical traditions from both universalist and local perspectives.
The publication represents a significant scholarly contribution to the fields of Islamic literary studies and Ottoman intellectual history.
